Firefighters’ quick action saves multi-family structure, 3 treated for smoke inhalation
Brigantine – Early Sunday morning, January 9th, 7 firefighters under the command of Captain Alan Weidner responded in Engine 3, Truck 1 and BLS Rescue 2 for a report of a structure on fire with occupants trapped at 5:06 am in the unit block of Lighthouse Drive.
Upon their arrival, at 5:09, the crew found fire on the outside of the structure, that obstructed the entranceway to both units of the residence, a two story, multiple family duplex located at 30 Lighthouse Drive. Both units were occupied at the time of this call, and two residents of the first floor unit, who were alerted to the blaze by their smoke detector, exited the structure through a dining room window. Brigantine Police Officer William Ferris forced his way into the second story unit of the structure, and evacuated the occupants of that unit, prior to the arrival of the Fire Department.
2 residents and a Police Officer were treated and transported by Brigantine Firefighter-EMT’s to Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center for suspected smoke inhalation. All 3 were subsequently treated and released.
The Engine 3 crew of Lieutenant-EMT Christopher Solari and FF-EMT Kyle Driscoll extended a fire attack line to the front door of the structure, and extinguished the bulk of the flames, which consumed the outside wall and entranceway to the structure. Simultaneously, the Truck 1 crew of Firefighter-EMT’s Gregg Goff, Shaun Cooke and Ron Roberts began to search both units for additional victims and ventilate the smoke and noxious gas from the entire structure.
The fire was brought under control quickly, and fire crews stayed on the scene for almost 90 minutes, searching for hidden fire, performing salvage and overhaul, as well as completing the investigation.
Both units sustained moderate smoke damage, due to the fire burning unnoticed for an extended period of time, with damage estimated at about 25,000 dollars.
The fire was investigated by Fire Investigator Joseph Lavigna, and is still under investigation, but at this time, appears to be accidental.
3 additional off duty firefighters were called in to cover the rest of the island while this fire was in progress.
