The
Island Development Real Estate Company built the Brigantine Lighthouse
as a sales attraction in 1926. During the Depression it was used as headquarters
for the Brigantine Police Department. When the second wave of development
started in the 1940s, it was used as a museum and gift shop. As traffic
increased around the circle, this idea had to be abandoned.
As the lighthouse
began to deteriorate, a group of volunteers refurbished the building inside
and out in 1995. Today it stands as the centerpiece of the island, landscaped
and alight every night, an identifying symbol for the Island of Brigantine
Beach.
